Hilton Head Concours D’ELEGANCE & Motoring Festival 2022

During the first week of November the truck had the opportunity to attend the 2022 Hilton Head Concours d’Elegance in Hilton Head, South Carolina. The trek began with a little bit of prep and packing. The truck was loaded onto its first enclosed transport and driven off.

A few weeks later we met up with the truck just off the main road in Hilton Head and drove it into place.

Rolling the truck off of the trailer meant that another state could be marked on the list of places the truck has driven. The day the truck arrived in South Carolina the weather was cooperative, toasty but not quite humid enough yet. A light drizzle was in the forecast over the weekend. I drove to the registration tent, met up with a friend, picked up the paperwork for the event and was off. The truck was led off the golf cart path and over a few small hills before finding a parking spot next to the lunch tent, amongst several other movie/pop culture related vehicles. The truck was assembled and left in place for the rest of the weekend.

Oftentimes, when the truck makes its way to events and car shows, it is often mistaken for a functioning food truck. If not that, the looks the truck gets when rolling into events is often comes from a “What is that doing here?” for the uninitiated. I can say without any hesitation that the Hilton Head Concours has to be one of the most welcoming car shows the truck has had the pleasure of attending. Even though while walking the green one could find examples of some of the rarest cars I’ve seen outside of the Petersen Automotive Museum. One car in particular was the Ferrari Prototype with the serial number 0002, the second Ferrari ever produced and the first to be imported into the United States. The first day of the event there was an entire section devoted to Japanese vehicles, ranging from the tiny and might keiy trucks to a massive shrine hoisted on the back of Japan’s version of a Lincoln Town Car, which functioned a luxury hearse. Walking further into the field there was a section devoted solely to McLarens, another section featured a collection of Alfa-Romeos, closer to the truck you would find a section of vintage speed boats, celebrity vehicles and even an vintage motorized ice cream cart.

Throughout the weekend I found myself pinching myself as I looked across the green at the parade of vehicles. Vintage functioning history on wheels idling through the hills during the awards ceremony, with the truck sitting just above it all on a little hill on the far side of the green. If you had told me over ten years ago that the truck would be shipping across the country for a third time so it could attend a well-known car show as part of the display I would have had a good chuckle. Instead I found myself on a humid November sitting in the exhibitor tent once again being swept away by the sensation of how far the truck has come in the past decade. I snapped a few photos and texted them to various members of the crew, “Have a look at this!”

When the show concluded the truck idled back into the box truck, soon to be whisked back across the country. With a few more miles on the odometer and another checkmark on the states visited checklist.

A special thanks goes out to Walker who sent the email that nearly made my eyes fall out of my head, as well as all of the staff and volunteers at the event for running such a well-oiled machine.
